What is A Copyright, and What Will it Do For You?

Here’s something you’ll probably never hear another attorney say outloud. ⠀

I think the term “Copyright” is just so confusing. ⠀

The word literally says, “copy, right?” ⠀
So that means it is ok for me to just copy, right? ⠀

Wrong. ⠀

So what does the word “copyright” MEAN? ⠀

I am not taking about “copy” - which is what copywriters will write for you. If you’re here looking for web copy, I’ll kindly refer you to the lovely @mycopycrush.

In the LEGAL sense, “Copyright” is a legal right to something you’ve created. You can protect many kinds of things that you create with a copyright registration with the USPTO. (Note that this is different from trademark protection, which is usually for a brand name/logo/slogan/etc).⠀

What does copyright PROTECT? Copyright protection ensures that you, as the creator of someTHING have the exclusive right to use that THING.⁣ That means others can’t copy/take/steal your creations! ⠀

What CAN YOU PROTECT under copyright? Blog posts, t-shirt designs, podcast episodes, books, photographs, course content, videos, & more! As long as you’ve created something original, you usually can protect it under copyright!⠀

If you’re wondering if something that you’ve created  can be protected under copyright protection, let’s set up a call! ⠀
