There’s so many different ways to “share” something on social media. Do you ever pause to make sure that you’re legally ALLOWED to post or repost that quote/picture/screenshot/etc.?
How do you ensure that your IG content is legally safe to post?
1. Create your own content as often as you can. If you personally took that beautiful sunset photo then by all means, post away!
2. If you’re posting something that you did not personally write/take a photo of/ create, be careful. Copyright law protects original works of others. Simply giving someone credit for their visual, auditory, or written copyrighted work (via @ tags) on IG is NOT enough! You MUST get their consent! A quick DM granting you permission is sufficient on IG.
3. In more complex scenarios, consent will involve a license or assignment to use another person’s photos, their written content, or perhaps even their recorded works. I suggest you work with an attorney to make sure you keep yourself protected in these situations.
And yes - IG’s “reshare” function that allows you to share a post to your story or to DMs is totally cool and lawyer-approved
