Testimonials

Your sales page may be beautiful, but it’s missing something big. Something legal.‼️⠀

[File this in the saved folder, you’ll need it]. ⠀

Testimonials from clients or customers are an extremely significant part of your customer experience. It shows buyers that you are trustworthy, great to work with, and/or that your products or services are high-quality and as-expected (or better yet – exceed expectations!) ⠀

But if you’re grabbing testimonials without getting the proper permission from your customer or client, you’re doing it illegally. ⠀

It is a *legal requirement* to get the proper permission from your customer to use their testimonial on your sales page or for sales in general. ⠀

And FYI – a quick “do I have your permission” doesn’t cut it.

Here’s some other ways your testimonials may be hurting you more than helping you (and if someone reports you to the FTC, may mean penalties in the thousand$$$).

Fake testimonials. Always a no-no. Remember when @sundayriley got in trouble for this on Sephora’s site?

Materially altering the testimonial. Only with permission, you can change around punctuation or non-material parts of the testimonial. But you can’t move around words or sentences or add things to make it “look better.”

Telling customers what to say. You cannot tell your customer how to write the testimonial! Period.

Paying for/giving out products or services for testimonials without disclosing it. The FTC has strict rules against this one.

Reusing a testimonial you didn’t write and get specific permission to use. Can someone say...copyright infringement?⠀

Using above-average testimonials that may mislead your potential customers. Did someone make $50k off a launch from your coaching help? AMAZING. But if this isn’t what your average client makes, you have to disclose this. Same thing goes with products. ⠀

Let’s protect those testimonials. ⠀
