Operating Online
Is your online business operating legally?⠀
⠀⠀
As a result of social distancing, many are taking in-person events and businesses online, using this as an amazing opportunity to collaborate with others virtually, go “live” together, record content, and sell things online.⠀
⠀⠀
The online space is an amazingly convenient one, but we need to be aware of the plethora of legal considerations to consider before jumping into the deep end.
⠀⠀
(Please share this post with anyone you know who has “gone virtual.”)⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Here’s your Online Business Checklist: ⠀
⠀⠀
1. Webinar Release Form: Are you planning on recording content with a guest? Collaborations are great, but if you’re recording another person you need their consent. You also need to have them sign a release of their right to publicity – and most importantly – you need to GUARANTEE you own that content. ⠀
⠀⠀
2. Privacy Policy: Does your webinar or website ask for names & emails at sign-up? (aka an email subscription). Then you MUST have a privacy policy. No wiggle room here. The privacy rules are super strict, so DO NOT proceed without this.
⠀⠀
3. Copyright Protection: Especially if you’re planning on monetizing the webinar/summit/workshop/recorded event – protect the actual video content via copyright protection! Your content is valuable. Don’t leave it susceptible.
⠀
4. Refund Policy: Is your webinar available to purchase? Are your online products returnable? Where do you draw the line? You’ll need to have a proper refund/return policy in place in the event a purchaser asks for a refund (believe it or not, some payment processors will keep your funds hostage until they see the proper policies on your page .
⠀
Stay safe & compliant!
