Copyright Corner

We’ve all done it at some point. Screenshotted/taken/grabbed a photo by someone else and slapped it on our Instagram feed (or maybe even out website). Before I took Copyright Law in law school, I was infringing more often than I would like to admit. Someone even called me out on it once over Instagram! (I still am terribly sorry about it, but those puppies were too cute not to share! )⁣

So how do you ensure that your web/IG/marketing content is safe to post? For starters, do your best to create your own content - copyright law protects original works of authorship. If you aren’t posting your own content, be careful. Simply giving someone credit for their visual, auditory, or written copyrighted work (via @/📷 tags) on IG or a website is NOT enough! You MUST get their consent! A quick DM or email granting you permission to use a photo or post should be sufficient. (Shout out to Halo Top Creamery for being awesome & using my photo with permission that one time). In more complex scenarios, like hiring a photographer, consent will involve a license/assignment to use their photos...but let’s save that for another day. ⁣⁣

Ultimately, it is up to you to be responsible with your posted content. For Instagram, please read their terms https://help.instagram.com/126382350847838 and reach out if you have questions. FYI: IG’s “reshare” function that allows you to share a post to your story/via DM is totally cool and lawyer-approved ⁣⁣

Don’t be a copyright copycat! Email me if you have questions about safely posting content! ⁣
