Protect Your Content

Releasing your precious work out into the world can be really exciting - but what’s that strange lingering feeling in your stomach? ⠀

If you’re a creator of any kind, usually that worry is that someone is going to steal your idea, and run off into the sunset making cold hard cash off of your hard work.

It’s a healthy fear to have, and here’s what you can do about it.

3 Things You Can Do To Legally Protect Your Content. ⠀

• Wrapped up a killer course that’s ready for a release?⠀

• Wrote an e-book chock-full of value?⠀

• Releasing a guide with your “signature method”?⠀

The list of things you can protect is endless. Here’s how to protect what you’ve created. ⠀

1. Register your original works for copyright protection with the US Copyright Office. This is the #1 line of defense to take against people that steal your work. Why? Well for starters, you can’t sue for damages $$$ or take formal legal action without a registration. Empty threats against an infringer only go so far. ⠀
⁣⠀⠀
2. Your contracts should include language regarding your ownership of intellectual property (trademark, copyright, etc.) so that when you partner up with someone/work with someone, you make sure that they’ve agreed to NOT steal your work. (Sounds silly, but this happens all the time). ⠀

3. Make sure your website/terms of use/copyright notice/etc. contain language stating you own the copyright! This is something as simple as a notice on your website to warn visitors that you are claiming rights to your work! ⠀
