Collaboration Do’s and Dont’s
It’s Collab season! (Or something’s in the air, since this is a hot-button topic in my inbox .)
Whenever heading into a potential collaboration or joint venture, make sure to find out these two things before you start negotiating anything:
1. How will the content or material be used? Will it be recorded or shared? Is it living on a platform somewhere after? Look ahead to where your content is going and how long it’s going to be available. Don’t allow this simple oversight to be a missed opportunity for you to negotiate more buck for your bang. (See what I did there?)
2. Is this collaboration effort seeking financial gain or other win of some sort? Are we planning to make money, collect emails, gain followers? If they’re making money or grabbing emails off of your content, you need to be compensated appropriately. Don’t give the milk away for free when they should be paying more for the cow. (Your valuable content/material ).
If someone is asking to collaborate with you, they see VALUE in what you offer. Use that to your advantage, and negotiate your worth!
