Build Your Email List Legally
Since the IG blackout !! I’ve been hearing a whole lot of this:
Collect emails!
Build your email list !
You OWN your email list. You don’t own your social!
…which is all true. But the key ingredients they’re missing are:
Make sure you have a privacy policy on your website/landing page.
Follow FTC guidelines when sending emails.
Collect + share emails legally (because yes, it’s very easy to do it illegally).
Here’s five (5) crucial tips for you as you’re navigating the email marketing game: whether you’re capturing an email address at checkout; asking for an email address in exchange for a freebie; or just collecting emails to get that list growing.
*pssst...saving this post is highly suggested*
1. You’ve GOT TO HAVE a Privacy Policy. No ifs, ands, or buts. Include it on your website, landing pages, sales pages, etc. (Tip: FB sometimes won’t let you run ads without one!).
2. Your subject lines must be accurate (no using "re;" to catch attention, no “fake-outs” to get your open rate % up).
3. Make it easy to unsubscribe. Don't hide that unsubscribe button or make it difficult to find. Also don’t be afraid to unsubscribe your own subscribers. It’s good for your delivery and open rate
4. Be transparent! Don't use misleading header information (say exactly who the email is from) and you must share your business address (the footer is a great spot).
5. Don’t share or sell emails unless you legally know how to. Period. Sharing or selling email addresses unlawfully is a huge no-no.
Violations of #1: Start at $2,500
Violations of #2-5: Start at $43,280 *per* violation.
